What Yoga is actually doing to your body


Yoga often gets linked with flexibility, and one of the first things people say is that they are not flexible enough to do it. But actually, that is not really the interesting part. What is more useful to understand, is what yoga is actually doing to the body when we practise it.

As we get older, it is completely normal to feel a bit stiffer. Muscles can feel tighter and joints don’t always move as freely. It is not necessarily that flexibility has suddenly disappeared, it is often that the body is just not being moved in as many ways as it used to be.



Yoga helps to change that. It takes the body through different ranges of movement, often slowly and with a bit more control than we are used to. When joints move regularly, they are supported by synovial fluid, which helps to lubricate and nourish them. It is why people often say movement helps to “oil the joints”, and why the body can start to feel less stiff when you move it more consistently.


Flexibility is also not just about stretching muscles. The nervous system plays a big role. If the body feels tense or a bit guarded, it will limit how far you can move. Slower movements and steady breathing help the body relax, and over time that is when you start to notice things feeling a little easier.


Yoga also builds strength, which often gets overlooked. Holding positions helps support the muscles around the joints, improving stability, balance and posture. That mix of strength and mobility becomes more important as we get older.


So rather than worrying about how flexible you are, it is probably more helpful to think about how your body is moving. Yoga helps keep things moving, and over time that is what tends to make the biggest difference.  Movement is medicine and when it is combined with relaxation and breath work it can be very powerful and enable us to continue to be fit to love our lives !
