Too stiff for Yoga, Think again !

After a very wet winter, spring is finally really here and it feels like our bodies need a good stretch after all that wet weather, and one of my favourite yoga quotes came to mind : 


 “Saying you’re not flexible enough for yoga is like saying you’re too dirty to take a bath.” 



It sounds amusing, but it highlights one of the biggest misconceptions about yoga.

Many people assume they need to be flexible to be able to start yoga. In reality, yoga is not about touching your toes but about gradually improving how your body moves and feels.



For many people, particularly as we move into midlife, stiffness becomes more noticeable. Sitting more, daily stresses, injuries, arthritis and the natural changes that happen in our bodies can all lead to reduced mobility. Yoga offers a way to gradually restore movement, improve posture, and ease tension in muscles and joints.


What is often overlooked is that yoga is not just about stretching. Many styles also build strength and help with balance. Holding poses and moving with control challenges the muscles, and poses which require balance are important both for strength, but also to help maintain balance as we age.


The beauty of yoga is that it is not a one size fit all, and can be adapted to suit different bodies and abilities. None of us come to the mat with the same body. As we get older especially, our bodies all carry different histories, injuries, tight areas or joints that need a little more care. Yoga allows you to move your body in the way it needs to move, rather than forcing it into how you think it should look. Movements can be modified, options can be offered, and progress tends to happen gradually as the body becomes stronger and more mobile.


So if you have ever thought you were too stiff for yoga, it may simply mean yoga is exactly what your body needs. Like the quote suggests, the very reason people think they cannot do yoga is often the best reason to start.


You can read all about the different yoga classes that I offer. They are all suitable for beginners or those that feel very stiff. And for those like me who have arthritis creeping into your joints so you can not move as you used to the classes allow your body to move a it can do , not forcing but allowing the movement to continue .


Yoga really is such a great way to ensure that our bodies can continue to move so that we can carrying on living life to the fullest. Keeping us fit to love life .
